Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the most highly prized plant-based herb and adaptogen used in Ayurvedic Medicine, the traditional health care paradigm of India. Adaptogens are just like they sound – they help the body adapt to stress and support the body’s ability to cope more effectively with stress. Adaptogens have a normalizing influence on the body, meaning whatever direction stressors are throwing the body out of balance, adaptogens help to bring the system back into balance – and ashwagandha is one of the best.
Along with managing stress, ashwagandha has been used for thousands of years to support the immune system, health and cognitive function, thyroid function, reproductive health in men and women, and much more.
Live Superfoods Ashwagandha Root Powder is a light tan color, with a slightly nutty fragrance and slightly bitter flavor. It is also Raw, USDA Organic Certified, Kosher, Vegan and Non-GMO. 12 oz in resealable package.
Live Superfoods Ashwagandha Root Powder, 12 oz
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an extensively used herb in Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional health care paradigm of India. It’s an adaptogen plant and is commonly referred to as “Indian Ginseng” because it supports a healthy stress response. Adaptogens work to modify the body’s reaction to stress and alter the release of stress hormones in the body, particularly from the adrenal glands. They do this by affecting the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis).
Ashwagandha contains more than 35 different withanolides, the biologically active compounds unique to the ashwagandha plant, and each possesses differing health benefits. Other useful compounds found naturally in ashwagandha include alkaloids, antioxidants, lactones, saponins, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars.
While the leaves and fruit have valuable therapeutic properties, the root of the ashwagandha plant is the part most commonly used in Western herbal remedies.
Hundreds of research studies have been done on ashwagandha, and due to its nervine and adaptogenic ability, it’s very effective for the following situations:
- Antioxidant protection
- Thyroid function
- Adrenal function
- Healthy Sleep and trouble sleeping because of stress
- Brain and Cognitive support
- Immune function (hyper or hypo)
- Supporting a normal inflammatory response
- Reproductive health and Fertility
- Menopausal health
Start with ¼ teaspoon ashwagandha powder and slowly work your way up to 1 teaspoon at a time. It can be mixed with water, ghee (clarified butter), juice, or honey. It’s commonly consumed as a warm beverage before bedtime and can be added to Moon Milk or Turmeric Golden Tea to provide a feeling of relaxation. The powder easily mixes with juice. A great combination is ¼ teaspoon ashwagandha with 1 Tbsp tart cherry juice.
To support healthy sleep habits, consider taking ashwagandha thirty minutes before sleep. For those with more serious sleep troubles, stress or nervousness, consider upping the dose slowly. Start low and work up to the dose of ashwagandha.
As with most herbs, ashwagandha root powder is best taken on an empty stomach.
