Hi friends, I’m Kelly Harrington! Welcome to the Healthy Goods blog. I hope you find lots of useful and interesting nutrition and supplement information here. My aim is to provide you with no-nonsense nutrition information that’s easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, and easy to put into practice.
On the Healthy Goods blog you'll read cool information about:
- utilizing food and specific nutrients to support health concerns
- how to get the most out of your supplements
- hot nutrition topics
Over the next few months, you may notice a trend in the blog topics as my life is about to become very crazy with baby boy #2 due in March, alongside my 17 month old son! Yikes! With that said, the past two years of my life have been consumed by pregnancy, breastfeeding, caring for an infant, and now back to more life as a pregnant person and mom. When I found out I was pregnant with my first born, it’s as if something in my brain clicked and suddenly I became more conscious about things I never treated as an urgency in my non-mother life. There’s so much to consider when, after all, a little guy is developing inside me and is hostage to all my decisions.
How Do I Eat??
Nutrition is always top of mind. At the same time, even though I’m a registered dietitian, I pride myself in saying I am not the food police and I do have an open mind about food. I also understand what I put into my body does matter, especially since I'm pregnant, SO…in my typical, day-to-day routine I tend to steer clear of enriched, refined foods, hydrogenated fats, saturated fats, sodium nitrates, monosodium glutamate (MSG), high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweetener, and minimize the amount of added sugars I eat. These are changes I have slowly made over the past 10 years, and have become accustomed to over time, so it doesn’t seem as hard...it requires a conscious effort and reading the ingredients on labels.
With pregnancy, I started purchasing more organic and hormone free foods. It is occasionally more expensive, but I decided it is worth it. It’s amazing what motivates one’s self! I even have the dirty (and clean) dozen fruit and veggie app on my phone which I refer to when I grocery shop. It’s super handy…check it out at Environmental Working Group.
What Else Effects My Baby?
I’ve also become obsessed with other things that effect my baby, such as what’s in the lotion and makeup I apply on my skin, what’s in the lip balm I put on my lips, and the type of plastic I eat and drink out of. I only drink from BPA-free water bottles—I really like the stainless steel Klean Kanteens. The bottles even come in a cute, child-size for my son. I store leftovers in glass jars rather than plastic containers. To understand my fanatical rational for all this, check out my blogs on Xenoestrogens, Part 1 and Part 2. You’ll find some easy tips for cleaning up your lifestyle from these nasty toxins.
What’s To Come?
I hope you find value in my pregnancy blogs over the next few months. I will talk about prenatal supplements, calcium, fish and krill oils, probiotics, and other pregnancy and nutrition related topics. If you have any special requests for topics related to pregnancy or postpartum, please let me know. I am happy to talk about them!
